Dusky Moorhen Chick

Dusky Moorhen Chick

The Dusky Moorhen (Gallinula tenebrosa) tries to hide its very young offspring among reeds and rarely allows them out in the open like this. The black plumage of the chick makes it difficult to see among shaded reeds but the red and yellow bill compromises the camouflage and is often the only part of the young bird seen in shadow. This very young bird (no more than two weeks since hatching) has not yet grown feathers but is covered with black hairy bristles.
