Technology has impacted almost every aspect of life today, and education is no exception. Or is it? In some ways, education seems much the same as it has been for many years. The scene is easily recognizable because of its parallels to the modern day. The teacher lectures from a podium at the front of the room while the students sit in rows and listen. Some of the students have books open in front of them and appear to be following along.
The Role of the Educator
Teaching adults often looks very different from teaching children. Adult educators can make assumptions of their adult students that they would not make of children because adults have had vastly different life experiences and come with their own unique sets of background knowledge. Andragogy, or the practice of teaching adults, studies the best methods and approaches for effective adult education. Those teaching adults should understand and practice the five principles of andragogy espoused by Malcolm Knowles, a pioneer in the study of adult learning.
This paper gives an overview of adult education in Uganda, paying particular attention to rural development. The paper focuses mainly on agriculture, which is the backbone of the Ugandan economy and on which most other sectors depend. The article was first published in Africa Insight, Vol. Uganda is a country of plateaux and hills, marshes and lakes, stretching between the two arms of the Great Rift Valley, at the heart of the Great Lakes region of East and Central Africa. After gaining independence from Britain in , Uganda prospered briefly, then entered two decades of political turmoil, state-sponsered violence, economic decline and civil war.
