Another good alternative would be to use a braided stainless steel line, but they are double the price. Whenever installing plastic pipe with compression fittings such as these, you always want to use plastic ferrules. The ferrule, AKA sleeve or olive, is the part the compresses on to the pipe which makes for a leak free joint. If you use a brass ferrule, you run the chance of it cutting thru the pipe and causing the fitting to leak, this is where most DIYers make a mistake that could potentially lead to a disaster. Another thing to keep in mind is using a brass sleeve inside the pipe. However, if you feel like trying it out, I do suggest watching this video right here as it gives easy step-by-step instructions on how to properly solder a copper pipe.
Don’t Get Saddle Sore – How to Install An Ice Maker Line The RIGHT Way
Whoops, we couldn't find that.
I am buying a new fridge, but i don't think I can use the Ice Maker because there's no waterline running near that wall. However, I'm set on the side by side fridges, and don't see a single side by side without the ice maker. At least in my price range. Is it possible to plug in the fridge, and just not plug in the ice maker, or would that cause problems? You can still use the fridge without using the ice maker without any problems BUT I can't imagine not using that feature.
How to Connect an Ice Maker Like a Pro
Refrigerators with automatic ice makers are a great convenience, especially on a hot day. However, there is nothing automatic about getting a water line hooked up to the ice maker. If you are lucky, there will be a hookup in your kitchen wall near the refrigerator.
When you install a new refrigerator, it's a good idea to hook up the ice-maker at the same time. If it's for yourself, you'll have an added convenience that would take more effort to add later. If you'll be showing the house, you'll be able to demonstrate that the refrigerator is not only up and running, but also has a functional added perk. There are a couple of ways to attach a PVC pipe to an ice-maker's water line, but you won't know which approach to take until you know what type of pipe makes up the ice-maker's line. Nonetheless, this is not a difficult task and anyone with moderate do-it-yourself experience will be able to get the job done.
